CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Laszio loved the power of the motorbike. He'd take it out at least a couple of times a week, and expertly maneuvering through the traffic, he was soon pulling into the hospital parking lot. Finding a space was always easy with a bike, and walking into the emergency room he casually approached the middle-aged woman behind the window.

"May I help you?"

He immediately sensed her disapproval. She did not find his long hair and leather jacket appealing.

"Good afternoon," he began, flashing her a friendly smile. "I'm looking for a patient who would have been admitted a couple of days ago. Her name is Mary Cavalier."

"Are you family?" she asked, her lips pursed and her eyes judgmental, obviously not impressed by his pleasant demeanor.

Leaning forward, he broadened his grin, and though she instinctively leaned back in her chair, he locked her eyes.

"Listen now and hear me well, if Mary is here, you will tell, which ward and room, make clear to me, you know you must immediately."

As he slowly straightened up, she blinked, then frowned, then began typing on her computer keyboard.

"Yes, here she is. Mary Cavalier. Ward Five, third floor, room 316. She's due for release in a couple of days. No insurance."

"Please send me the bill at this address," he said softly, handing her a card. "I'll take care of all her expenses. Is that a nice room she's in?"

"Not particularly. Three other patients."

"You'll move her to a private room in an excellent location right away. Do you understand?"

"Yes, I understand. "

"Thank you."

Wishing he'd checked on her sooner, he found his way through the labyrinth of passageways, took the elevator to the third floor, and quickly found her room. She was in the bed furthest from the door, and though the space was drab, as he approached he felt a warm, comforting energy. Pausing, he silently asked to see its source. A golden glow materialized, shrouding her and her bed. It was a heavenly halo.

She had a guardian angel, and reverently he moved slowly forward.

"Laszio. I'm so happy to see you," she said softly. "I've been thinking about you so much."

"Me? You shouldn't be thinking about me, you should be thinking about getting out of here. How are you? What have the doctor's said, and the police? Do they know who did this?"

"The police said I'm one of the luckiest assault victims they've run across, and I agree. Thank goodness for Angelo. He saved me. The doctors tell me I'll have a scar, but I don't care. I'm alive, and it's a miracle."

He could sense she was still traumatized, and sitting on the edge of the bed he took her hand.

"Talk to me," he murmured, quietly weaving his magic. "Tell me everything that you need to. Tell me what you're thinking and feeling. Tell me how scared you are."

"I'm afraid to sleep. I'm afraid to leave here, and I'm afraid not to. Why did he pick me? It was creepy that night. I remember saying that to you. It was as if I could feel something bad in the air.
